Created in God's Image: The Power to Think and Do
Exploring how being created in God's image gives us the power to think independently and take purposeful action.
"Every human being, created in the image of God, is endowed with a power akin to that of the Creator: individuality, the power to think and to do."
— Education, p. 17
Each of us, made in God's image, is designed to reflect His divine qualities physically, mentally, and spiritually. That includes a unique power that mirrors the Creator Himself: the ability to think independently and to take purposeful action.
Reflecting God's Nature
This tells us that our minds (how we think, reason, and make decisions) are central to how we relate to God. We are not only called to imitate His goodness in what we do, but also to reflect His nature in how we think.
Adam's First Act of Independent Thought
We see this clearly in Genesis 2, when God brought the animals to Adam to name them. That was not a minor task. It was Adam's first real opportunity to exercise independent thought. One by one, he gave each creature a name. This simple act reveals a deeper truth: we were not created to be passive or merely reactive. We were designed with the ability to think for ourselves, to take initiative, and to create.
The Power of Individuality
This aligns with the broader truth that every person, made in the image of God, carries a power akin to that of the Creator: individuality, and the ability to think and do. We were not created to be mere reflectors of other people's thoughts. We are called to use our own minds, to think clearly and act with purpose.
God's Pattern: Think, Speak, Do
When God created the world, He demonstrated this same power. He did not use tools or raw materials. He simply spoke, and it happened. "Let there be light," and there was light. With each word, God brought structure to chaos, filled emptiness, and sparked life where there was none. This pattern (thinking, speaking, and doing) is a core part of His divine nature.
Our Reflection of Divine Power
And because we are made in His image, we have been given a reflection of that same ability. We are not all-powerful like God, but we do have the capacity to shape our world through our thoughts and actions. When we begin to understand and embrace this, our lives begin to change. We discover new solutions, create things that did not exist before, and start to influence the world around us in meaningful ways.
The Power Within Everyone
That is the power to think and to do. And it is not just for a few. It is something every person carries. Those who recognize and develop it often become leaders, people who make a real difference, not because they are copying others, but because they are drawing on something deep within, the image of the Creator Himself.
Remember: You were created with the power to think and to do. This is not a privilege for a select few—it's the birthright of every person made in God's image. Recognize it, develop it, and use it to make a difference.
